Translation introduction

Hi again!

I present you with the translation of Slayers Special 2!

Work on this took a little longer than expected but it ended up pretty well.

Recently I purchased a collection of the entire Slayers Special and Slayers Smash series (totaling 35 novels!), while I obviously can’t promise to translate them all, I do intend to more Slayers work.

As of this writing I’m doing a retranslation of the Slayers Special and Slayers: Super-Explosive Demon Story mangas, having already published a full retranslation of Slayers Premium.

(You can find them all in MangaDex, and some other sites, I’m sure.)

As you can tell I really like Lina Inverse’s adventures.

Thanks for reading, and as always, for your support.

Enjoy!

Afterword

With author Hajime Kanzaka, L and S!

Kanzaka: Sorry for the long wait! We’re pleased to bring you Slayers Special Volume 2: Little Princess!

L: It turned out well.

Kanzaka: But not exactly in a timely manner. Either way, I hope for your support this year, too. By the way, the 1992 New Year’s card featured a chibi version of Miss L drawn by an original artist. I don’t think it came out very well, or very accurate!

L: You… shouldn’t say that. For the record, the illustration captured me as the graceful beauty I am.

Kanzaka: Who will you believe, dear reader? This woman hits more than she talks.

L: Shut up!

S: …That aside, let’s get to the main topic.

L: Yes, let’s begin! First, let me introduce you!

S: That’s not necessary.

L: What! Come out, Subordinate S!

S: Yes, ma’am!

Kanzaka: Hold on, there are other things before we introduce S!

L: Ah, you’re still here…

S: Don’t push your luck. Ahem… Anyway, Slayers fans around the world, thank you for waiting! We can finally announce the results of the very first Slayers character popularity poll! (Some fanfare would be nice here.)

L: But just announcing the top ten sounds a little dull, don’t you think?

Kanzaka: What should we do, then?

L: Hmm…

S: Since the votes were tallied in three stages, how about showing each stage’s results, like a live broadcast?

L: Wow! A great idea for once.

S: …For once?

Kanzaka: Well then! The first character popularity poll has arrived! Where will your favorite rank? I, Hajime Kanzaka, will moderate!

L: That was way too long, but I’m L, a beautiful blonde and absolutely invincible woman.

S: And I’m S, reporting live.

L: What will the results be?

Kanzaka: I think Lina will easily take the top spot. But I’m curious about second place. Will it be Gourry or Naga?

L: What about Zelgadis? Or… me?

Kanzaka: (bursts out laughing)

Bam!

Kanzaka: …I sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused. Ow, my head…

S: Now then, the first stage of the poll. The author received the fan mail from the editorial department and opens the envelope! I took a quick peek earlier: quite a few votes for Amelia! Now the tally begins. Lina and Gourry are steadily rising! Huh?! Naga isn’t climbing as much as expected! Oh, even the author got a vote!

L: So he’s a character too?

Kanzaka: You could say the afterword counts…

S: Are votes for the author even valid? Either way, he received an insignificant amount, less than Noonsa! He’s losing to a fish!

Kanzaka: …Leave me alone.

S: First place, as expected, goes to Lina! Next is Gourry, and then… third place is L, beating Zelgadis by just one point!

L: Wow!

S: Next up is… Amelia! Beating Naga by a narrow margin! The new character takes up fifth place[1]! Contrary to what I expected Naga came in sixth! After her, rather far behind is Phil, then …me? Followed by Eris, Noonsa, Lina’s older sister, and a bunch of whoevers!

L: Naga in sixth is a surprise.

Kanzaka: And that’s the first tally. On to stage two!

S: Lina and Gourry gain points as usual! Oh, Zelgadis just got a big boost! Lots of female fans are pushing him past L and closing in on Gourry!

L: Aww…

S: Zelgadis is strong! Will he overtake Gourry… wait.

L: Hmm? What is it?

Kanzaka: Did something happen?

S: We just uncovered fraud! The same person sent multiple votes for Zelgadis. Fifteen points are invalid!

Kanzaka: I get playing favorites, but…

L: That’s blatant.

S: Even so, Zelgadis remains popular with female fans. Not quite at Gourry’s level, but a solid third. L drops to fourth, and Naga overtakes Amelia. Well behind them are Phil, me, Eris, and the author.

L: All right, time for the final stage!

S: Everyone’s tally keeps rising, the rankings are shifting again!

L: I’m excited!

S: Aaaaaand we have the final results!

Kanzaka: Time for the grand reveal. It’s obvious who’s on top, so let’s start from the bottom… actually, forget that! In first place, as expected, the Evil Goddess of Destruction herself: Lina Inverse, with approximately 236 points!

L: Approximately?

Kanzaka: We received so many votes we had to estimate just to finish.

S: Yeah, if we used exact numbers, Amelia alone would have, like, 200 million votes.

L: Well, the winner was obvious. How about the rest?

Kanzaka: Second place goes to Gourry Gabriev with 226 points! Zelgadis couldn’t complete the comeback, but he takes third with 161. Fourth is Lina’s self-proclaimed rival, Naga the Serpent, with 106!

L: …Huh?

Kanzaka: Fifth, with a sudden surge, is Princess Amelia at 102 points!

L: …Umm…

Kanzaka: Sixth place goes to L, dropping to 92 points in the final tally!

(L is stunned while S struggles not to laugh.)

Kanzaka: Seventh place goes to the charming Prince Philionel with 40 points. I take eighth, though I’m not worthy. S claims ninth, and Eris rounds out the top ten.

(L remains in a daze.)

Kanzaka: Lina’s sister lands at 11th, not as high as expected. Twelfth is Noonsa. Thirteenth is a tie between Sylphiel and the Sorcerer with a Thousand Names. Fifteenth is another tie: Mina and Kanzel (why him?) Seventeenth, yet another tie, Canny and Rezo. And in nineteenth place we have a four-way tie: Zuuma, Raymia, Lantz, and Rahanimu, each with only five points.

S: So Lina and Gourry held steady at the top, and Zelgadis proved hugely popular too. Without the fraud, he might have taken second. Zel definitely has a fanbase.

Kanzaka: You do too, both fans and haters.

S: Yeah… Well, see you all next time!

Kanzaka: Wait, I never said there’d be a next time!

S: Huh? No second poll?

Kanzaka: Maybe. If we do, I’ll announce it in another afterword.

S: Thanks for joining us for the 1991 Slayers Character Popularity Poll!

Kanzaka: And thanks for reading!
