The last class of the day was soon to be over, all that was left was homeroom.
“Hey, have you heard? Apparently, there's a rumor that says that if you see a shooting star and make a wish three times before it disappears, the great spirit of tongue twisters will grant your wish.” Dodonko was talking about fairy tales while sitting on her desk, impolitely.
“You always talk about silly rumors like that.” Replied Funifura, lazily resting her chest on the desk, “The other day you told me about a ritual of putting the hair of someone you like into a straw doll and nailing it into a tree at midnight, cursing them to love you back.”
“I've heard about that.” Surprisingly, Arue showed interest for this typical adolescent topic, “A girl tried it, and every time her target looked at her his heart ached, he wondered if it was love, and eventually they felled.”
“Oh yeah, that's it! Romantic, isn't it? If I find someone I like, I’ll steal his hair and stuff it into a straw doll!” Said Dodonko, not very maiden-like.
There’s a custom in the clan about giving loved ones amulets with the maker’s hair, Dodonko’s story is probably related to that.
A seemingly uninterested Yunyun loudly slammed the book she was reading shut and took another one from her desk.
‘Binding friends with magic’ huh? Both the title and what she did just now seems like she is interested, just too shy to join the conversation.
Either way, she reading that worries me.
As my classmates were chatting away the classroom door opened.
“Alright girls take your seats. Let's do some homeroom and head home.” The homeroom teacher entered without hiding his tiredness. “Everyone should wear warm clothes for a while.”
“Excuse me, I don't understand what you're talking about.” Said Yunyun, who raised her voice as to not be ignored.
It was the peak of summer; the cicadas were chirping loudly in the forest around the Crimson Magic Village.
“Oh dear” replied the teacher “it’s been such a warm summer this year that just looking at you girls is making me feel hot.”
Not something a teacher should be saying to his class.
“Outsiders may say ‘Why not just take off the robes?’ However, we all know the robe a trademark of the Crimson Magic Clan. So, we adults decided to forego the spirits that change the seasons and use weather manipulation to make it winter for a while.”
“I don’t dislike the way the Crimson Magic Clan brute forces through everything.”
Only the eccentric Yunyun was not convinced, and meekly withdrew.
With the noisy cicadas chirping all night long and the exhausting heat, it was no wonder the adults wanted to do something about it.
“Because of that, classes will begin and finish one hour later than usual starting tomorrow.”
Sure, it’s harder to walk through the snow, but isn't that treating us like children a bit too much?
“Hey, we’re not children anymore!” Funifura raised her hand, seemingly thinking the same as me, “We won’t be late just because of snow, you know? Even if it snows up to our waist, we can still make it in time if we leave the house a little early.”
Everyone in the classroom nodded.
“How long do you think I've been looking after you guys…? But if you say so, we’ll begin as usual. Make sure you’re here on time.”
After everyone agreed, the homeroom teacher snorted and walked out.
“...he has no trust in us.” I can't help but say that after seeing his attitude.
“Hey Megumin, you're the most likely to be late. Why don't you leave your house early tomorrow?” Yunyun overheard me and said something odd.
“Are you saying that my legs are short? Are you saying I'll have a hard time on snowy roads? I already beat you today, but fine! If you want to fight that much, then let's do it!”
“I-I didn’t say anything about your legs! It's just that you’re the shortest in the class, so I'm worried… T-That hurts! I'm sorry, please stop!”
“It’s not like I’m the only one short, Funifura is short too!”
“Wait, I'm not as short as you! I'm 1.4cm taller!” Funifura looks at me in shock while I pull Yunyun's hair.
********
I flung open the sliding door of a house that stood on the outskirts of the village.
“I’m home!”
“Sister, you're home! Did you bring me something?”
I got into a fight with Funifura about my height, once back home, Komekko greeted me.
“I brought my victory! Today, I was victorious not only against Yunyun, but also against Funifura!” As always, I smiled smugly.
“I can’t eat that! It’ll be winter starting tomorrow. Let's go catch lots of food now!”
Komekko picked up the bucket placed next to the door and left the house with a big smile on her face.
“Megumin, the lobster went that way!”
“Leave it to me, lobsters like crevices in rocks and dark places, just wait there!”
We were at the river, filling buckets with lobsters for the coming winter. In some regions, these creatures are called a crayfish, but here we call them lobsters.
“I got it! We should be good for a while!”
“My sister is amazing! We’ll eat lobsters tonight!” Komekko said, holding a bucket full of them.
“We need to soak them in water and clean them up before. We’ll eat them tomorrow.”
“Okay! Today, let's eat the frog I caught!” Said Komekko, holding a plump fat frog. It was a big deal for her to have such a big catch while I was away.
“Looks like it's going to be cold tonight, let's have some frog hotpot. Did you know that fried frog is the local delicacy in the town of Axel?”
“I want some!”
I’d love to take bright-eyed Komekko to taste some of Axel’s cuisine, but that town is for beginner adventurers, which means, I’ll be there for a very short time.
“Just in case, let’s sleep together tonight. The adults may go too far and end up freezing the entire village.”
“You’re a pervert, sis.”[1]
Wait, what’s she thinking about? Where is this girl learning this kind of stuff?
The next morning.
“Sis, it’s completely white outside!”
“That’s a lot of snow for one night! Komekko, let’s make snow angels!”
Excited by the snow that has piled, we went to the garden. I threw myself into the snow and began making a snow angel, while Komekko was just rolling around.
“Komekko, please be careful! This is my part!”
“I'll keep all the big parts of the garden for myself. Sis, please go to the corner.”
I should bury my greedy sister under the snow.
As we were laughing and throwing snow at each other, someone suddenly called out, “...I'm sorry for interrupting while you’re having fun, but if you don't go to school soon, you'll be late, okay?” I turned to face Yunyun, who had a somewhat jealous look on her face.
I was leaving footprints in the snow while I walked to school with Yunyun, choosing spots where no one has stepped on yet. Apparently, she anticipated that I would be late and came all the way to pick me up.
“It's true that I was a little excited, but teenage girls can't help but be excited about snow, right?”
“I don't think teenage girls jump into the snow like that.”
We entered school grounds while arguing.
“Eat my magic ball of ice and snow! Snow Crash!”
A snowball hit me on the back of the head. I turned to face my attacker and there was Funifura, with a smug and triumphant smile on her face.
“I'll join in! Hahahahahaha, eat this too!”
While I was about to counterattack, I was once again struck by a snowball. Behind me was Funifura’s usual companion, Dodonko, smiling happily.
“You cowards dare team up to fight me? …you’ll regret it! I'll mix your tears with the snow!”
“S-Stop! Wait, I don't want to be covered in mud first thing in the morning!”
“Don't do that! I’m sorry Funifura! You’ll have to fight alone!”
As they tried to run away, I tossed snowballs at both. Even though I am a mild-mannered person, I am at my limit after a series of surprise attacks.
“That looks fun, I'll join in too! Eat my Sideslow Snow!”
“Megumin is my rival, of course I'll have to join too! B-But it’s not like I want to play!”
Arue and Yunyun caught me by surprise. I threw out the snowball I was rolling for Funifura and ripped something hanging from a tree branch.
“Take my Icicle Arrow! I'll stab you all in the butt!”
“Icicles are dangerous! Sorry Megumin! It's okay, you win!”
After they saw the icicle, they all scattered like spiders. As I chased the crying Funifura, Nerimaki sitting in front of the school building called to us.
“It may be snowing, but it's still summer. Try this, it’s cold and sweet.”
She used snow to make shaved ice[2] and was offering it with colorful syrup bottles.
“As expected of Nerimaki, a true restauranteur!”
“That’s very clever! I like the look of the red syrup!”
After Funifura and I praised her, Nerimaki turned her palm towards us.
“That’ll be 50 Eris.”
The high intelligence of the Crimson Magic Clan is in full display here, she saw the opportunity for business and took it. The little money I had was taken from me.
We were all enjoying the shaved ice, when suddenly I felt a gaze. When I looked up, I saw the homeroom teacher staring at us from the classroom window.
“Because of the likes of you it’s said that the Crimson Magic Clan is highly intelligent, yet not smart.”
We were all late after having fun in the yard and entered the classroom without making a sound. Our homeroom teacher anticipated this and began class late; he must have been watching us closely.
“There’s still a few who haven't arrived yet. They’re probably playing around in the snow. If anything you’re the better ones.”
If Yunyun hadn't come pick me up, I would have been one of them.
The homeroom teacher let out a sigh of relief and took out a stack of papers to begin class. “Those who aren't here will have to make-up for class later. In the first period, we'll do curses. First, write the principal's name on the magic paper that I’m going to hand out. Next...”
Suddenly, a blinding light shone through the windows. After the homeroom teacher opened them, a lukewarm breeze blew in.
“Can’t be, the Great Spirit of Summer[3] is fighting back! To keep the weather as is, all the adults in the village, including me, will be busy for a while. It may be a bit sudden, but summer vacation has begun!”
Summer vacation, day 1
The Great Spirit of Summer counterattack was seen as inconvenient by most adults, so they were trying to make it snow again. Until this whole mess is over, I’ll have to stay at home with my younger sister.
“Komekko, after breakfast we’ll go out! Seems like the Great Spirit of the Summer is winning. Most of the snow has melted; let’s look for food at Demon Hill[4]!”
“Yay!”
“You can play with me every day during summer vacation. I won't let you be lonely anymore.”
“Then you won't have to feel so bad about not having any friends!”
What am I going to do with my sister, I'm starting to worry about her future.
“It's not that I don't have any friends, it's just that I'm a loner and don't fit in, but that's okay.”
“Yunyun said the same thing the other day!”
After getting ready we set forth to Demon Hill.
“Wild tomatoes live there. If we cook them with the lobsters we got yesterday they’ll make a good meal.”
“It’ll be a feast!”
It’s said that couples who confess their love on Demon Hill will never be able to separate due to a curse, making it a popular tourist spot for lovers.
The summer sun is intense, but thanks to the snow left behind and the shade of the trees, it’s not too warm. Komekko and I made our way through while holding hands, soon enough I ran into a classmate.
“Nerimaki? What are you doing here?”
“I came here to catch wild onions. Wild vegetables are popular and a good sale.”
It’s common sense that wild vegetables that can survive in a harsh environment are preferred over those grown on fields.
“Then, can we come along? Were you planning on catching tomatoes too? The more ingredients you have, the better.”
“Good! Well then, let's catch tomatoes and onions and have them fight!”
Pitting caught vegetables against each other is a game that everyone goes through as a child. If you give a strong vegetable a name and raise it, you'll become attached to it and won't be able to eat it. A long time ago, I raised some potatoes, but Komekko ate them while I wasn’t around.
“Okay Komekko, be careful with onions. They use tear magic to attack and unlike cabbages, they won’t fly away.”
“I understand! I’ll catch them quietly!”
“That's right, carefully. I'll show you how to do it, I’m used to working with ingredients because of my family!”
Nerimaki’s confidence gave me the feeling today would be a good day.
Summer vacation, day 2
Yesterday was tough, but today will definitely be a good day.
After all the effort we took to catch them, why did we pit the vegetables against each other?
Members of the Crimson Magic Clan have a habit of losing their minds when it comes to competition.
“Sis, it's almost noon! What are we going to play today?” Komekko, with swollen eyes, asked.
“I’m still hurt from yesterday; let's have some quiet fun today.” I replied with a smile “Let's take a walk around the village and think about it.” My eyes were also swollen from the vegetable battle.
“What a coincidence meeting in a place like this Megumin! Let’s go...what the hell happened to your eyes?!” While walking around the village with Komekko, we encountered my self-proclaimed rival.
“Yesterday I had a vegetable face off with Nerimaki, this is the result.”
“Onions are strong! They even beat tomatoes!”
“Oh, that's right... But I don’t understand the point of playing with food...” Of course, loner Yunyun wouldn’t get the appeal of the game.
“Yunyun, what are you doing here? Were you waiting to play with my sister?” Innocently asked Komekko, making Yunyun flinch.
“N-No, that's not true...! As the future chief I’m just walking around the village! Patrolling!” She replied in a hurry, but I wonder if she’s just wandering around aimlessly, hoping to run into someone she knows.
“That’s too bad. I thought of asking you to come with us but seeing as you’re busy it’s better to leave you alone.”
“We shouldn’t interrupt Yunyun’s patrol. Let’s look for someone who’s free.”
“Ah! Yeah... I-I'm busy! Let's meet when I have free time! By the way, I should be free tomorrow...” Yunyun muttered something as we left.
It's almost lunch time, I’m looking for an adult to treat us a meal. We were wandering outside Nerimaki’s family restaurant, waiting to bump with someone I know.
“Megumin! What are you doing here? Are you free?” Arue, who is usually supposed to be acting cool, appeared in an extremely excited mood.
“I am not. I’m just looking for an adult to treat us lunch.”
“That's what you call free time. Food, huh? I’ll treat you some!”
This is the first time I've seen Arue so excited, and I have a feeling that she's up to no good.
“No, it’s fine. It’s almost time for the neighborhood NEET to come.” I said turning my head away, “I’ll make him buy us some food.” Arue forcefully turned me around, her eyes glowing bright red.
“Don't be a stranger! You’re hungry, aren’t you? You should come to my house!”
“Let’s go!”
“K-Komekko! It’s fine to be treated in a restaurant, but don’t go to someone’s house so easily!”
As I was preaching the easily lured Komekko, Arue pulled me back, “I don't want to tell you how to look after your sister, but it’s not like that at all... I’m just interested in your opinion Megumin, that of the girl with the best grades in class.”
She was getting to me, because she praised me in front of my sister, not because of the food.
“We accept! Thank you! Thank you so much!”
“No, no, Komekko wait, I haven’t said agreed ye-...” I was interrupted as Arue dragged us to her house.
“…I don't have much time before the deadline! Please, Megumin, all you have to do is check for typos and spelling! I'll give you three meals and snacks! What do you say Komekko, is that good?”
“Perfect!”
“Komekko! I’ll be doing the work, you can't accept!”
Arue asked me to help her after brining us to her home and putting food in front of us. Seems that a book publisher is doing a novel contest, and she would like to apply for it.
“I'm not really aiming to be a writer, but I have a year left until I graduate, I'll have to decide on my career by then. I don't think I'll ever become one, but... But want to give it a try…'' She spoke really fast answering something nobody asked.
Seems that her manuscript is 80% complete but would like some proofreading work.
“I was planning to ask Nerimaki, but she’s usually busy at this hour. Seeing how you usually have so much free time, help me out!”
“No, I'm busy looking after Komekko...”
“Please use my sister as you wish. Can I eat now?” Before Arue could reply, Komekko devoured the food in front of her.
My younger sister, who I love so much, sold me out without hesitating.
“If you just want me to check for spelling, sure I’ll help.”
It can't be helped, Komekko’s already eating. I'm aiming to be a lone wolf, but it's fine to help others once in a while.
“To be a little greedier, I would like to hear your impressions after you read it all. But please be gentle, I may not be able to take harsh criticism.” As she said that I realized how troublesome helping others would be, I have to be a loner.
Summer vacation, day 3
I told the teary-eyed Arue that there was still plenty of time to improve her manuscript after giving it back. Even though she said she was ‘just trying’, she seemed quite serious about it.
The adults must have been very enthusiastic, when I woke up the area around my house was covered in snow, they’re going all out with the Great Spirit of Summer. Fortunately, we still have plenty of food. I’ll play with Komekko at home today.
I'm sure other eccentric members of the Crimson Magic Clan are quiet at home on a day like this.
Summer vacation, day 4
When I went outside, more than half of the snow that piled up yesterday had melted due to the Great Spirit of Summer’s attack.
Even though, it’s still quite cold and there are footprints on the snow all over the village. Apparently, some weirdo went out there to take a walk in such weather. Judging from the melting snowman sitting on the side of the road, the weirdo may be a child.
With so much snow, we can't go out to look for food, so we'll just play at home today as well.
It’s troublesome when it gets too hot, but I want the Great Spirit of Summer to do its best.
Summer vacation, day 5
The village is no longer just fighting the Great Spirit of Summer, the Great Spirit of the Storm has joined the battle!
A known summer feature, it’s right on schedule, because of the heavy rain and wind the remainder snow was wiped out.
The Great Spirit of the Storm gets excited in the summer, accumulates magical power, and goes berserk.
If not for all this mess, I’d be making my way to Axel already…
Summer vacation, day 7
The decisive battle between the Great Spirits and the adults was terrifying.
In front of the raging storm, all the female members who participated in the battle had their panties exposed by a powerful wind, the male members were just blown away.
After a fierce battle that lasted for day and night, the Great Spirit of the Storm seemed satisfied, muttered something in a language we couldn't understand and disappeared.
I don't know what it said, but from the satisfied look on its face, I guess it'll be back next year.
Finally freed from home, Komekko and I caught a fish washed up from the river by the storm and returned home satisfied.
Summer vacation, day 10
The battle between the Great Spirit of Summer and the adults continues even now.
Now that the Great Spirit of the Storm left, the adults are pushing back, there is a fair amount of snow around and the temperature has cooled, there’s even some snowmen around.
Arue asked me to read her manuscript again, while going to her house I saw a busy looking Yunyun entirely focused on a snowman. She didn’t notice us.
It’s good that she’s keeping busy, I guess.
Summer vacation, day 11
I got into a fight with Arue yesterday but ended victorious after taking her manuscript hostage. You could say I used the trademark high Crimson Magic Clan intellect to form a successful strategy. Though I may have overdone it.
Arue’s selfish comments were irritating me, she was telling me to be kinder and to ignore contradictions in her story. But I told her what I really thought, which turned out to be a bad idea.
I got to see an odd side of my usually cool and collected classmate as she attacked me with tears on her eyes.
Her eyes had swollen from all the crying. I’d like to help, but it’s better for her to do her best.
Summer vacation, day 15
We ran out of food, so we went to Demon Hill to get some more, there we found a crying Nerimaki.
Turns out she was attacked by flying cabbages while making onions fight each other. I’d definitely lose to them, but for someone in her position to lose against vegetables is unforgivable.
Wiping the tears of her cheeks Nerimaki vowed to become someone who could go toe to toe against all vegetables. She looked so cool.
Summer vacation, 10 days remaining.
Arue came to my house with huge dark circles around her eyes, wanting me to read her manuscript yet again. Is this really ‘just trying’?
After another round of harsh criticism, she said I’d become a demonic woman in the future, I did say her work was interesting though!
Arue went home shouting incomprehensible nonsense like “Don’t think I’ll fall for you just because you’re helping me improve so much!”
She's still trying to get better, that’s good.
Summer vacation, 5 days remaining.
The snowman by the side of the road had grown quite a bit. I didn’t want to mess with it, but seeing it get bigger day after day made me want to touch it. Why do works of arts stimulate my intrusive thoughts?
Yunyun scolded me after I dropkicked her snowman and made me promise to help her make another one tomorrow. I figured she’d be angry, but for some reason she looked happy.
Summer vacation, later that day
I was tortured by making a snowman over and over again.
Yunyun was in a good mood from beginning to end, but she didn't help because as she put it ‘I’ve been doing that many times already.’
...What did she mean by that?
I have a feeling I forgot to do something during summer vacation, but I’m so tired I can’t remember, that means it probably isn’t a big deal…
Summer vacation, 3 days remaining.
I gave Arue my thoughts yet again, this time she was in a good mood.
Now that her manuscript is complete, she was acting all cool again, saying things like “If I pass the first selection, I might become a writer!” and, “I’ll give you my autograph.” She was so annoying that I tried to steal her manuscript, but she resisted, half crying.
Hope she wins the award.
...I still feel like I'm forgetting something important.
Summer vacation, almost over…
That morning.
“Komekko, I’ll go back to school starting tomorrow, so please bear with me for a while. In return, I'll play with you to the fullest today.” I told Komekko, worried that she might be sad.
“Okay! Starting tomorrow, I'll be living an easy life again! It’s fine, I’m tired of you anyway.”
My beloved little sister again broke my heart with a rebellious response, I’m worried for her.
“Excuse me! Megumin, are you home?”
Even though it was still early in the morning, I heard voices I didn't recognize coming from the front door.
There stood Funifura and Dodonko holding bags. We aren't particularly close, it's odd for these two to come here.
“What are you doing so early? The first day of school is supposed to be tomorrow.”
They put their hands together and said, “We have a favor to ask you, genius of the Crimson Magic Clan! Please share with us your summer vacation homework!”
Komekko saw me off as I headed to Arue's house with Funifura and Dodonko.
“Arue owes me, we’ll have to be blunt.”
“I don't understand, but anything is fine as long as we copy her homework. I was so focused on my younger brother during summer vacation that I completely forgot about it!”
“I didn't think you wouldn’t do it Megumin. But whatever’s fine by me!”
When the snow piles up, we forget to go to school, and when it's summer vacation, we forget to do homework. If it was just me, it’d be bad, but as there’s three of us then we can call it a habit of the Crimson Magic Clan.
Eventually we arrived at Arue's house.
“Megumin, you know what I spent all summer vacation doing...” Arue said, looking far away with a satisfied look on her face, and went to grab her bag with her notebooks.
Seems that she’s also planning to come along to copy. If even the cool Arue forgot, then we’re running out of options. Funifura and Dodonko are wondering whose house we should go to next.
“Huh? What are you all doing here?” It was Nerimaki, her bag in her hand, who looked at us with a puzzled expression.
*
When we all arrived at the chief's house, for some reason I was forced to knock in front of the door. Apparently, I should call Yunyun.
“Yunyun, are you there?”
“Huh!?”
I hear muffled voices and thumping sounds coming from inside the house. As soon as the front door swung open, Yunyun peeked out.
“What's wrong Megumin? It's unusual for you to come to my house. W-what you want to fight!? A fight!?” Yunyun seemed happy and flustered going by the suspicious movements of her fists.
“We can wait until school starts before we continue our rivalry. No, I have a request for you...”
“What!? Well, you helped fix Jack the other day, so I don't mind!”
Jack? Who is Jack? She likes to give things odd names, maybe she means the snowman.
“Um, Yunyun, did you finish your summer vacation homework?”
“I finished on the first day...” The moment she said that, everyone's face, including mine, twitched.
Yunyun was probably looking forward to summer vacation and stayed up all night on the first day to finish homework. Guess it’s a good way to eliminate anxiety and have free time, being done with everything so early.
But she must’ve spent most of her summer vacation alone anyway…
There was no way we could copy Yunyun's homework after we were able to spend all summer vacation having fun.
We silently looked at each other and nodded, “No, it's fine. We haven’t finished yet. So, we were planning to get together and finish up.”
“Please, just wait a minute! I'll erase it all and join you!” Before I could finish, Yunyun said something outrageous.
“Yunyun, you finished your homework already! You don't have to do that! We'll do it at someone else's house!”
“N-No, it’s good for all to gather for a study session on the last day of summer vacation…” Yunyun looked like she was about to cry, but also as someone who came up with a great idea.
“Uh, um, well then… why don’t you copy my homework? I-If you don’t mind, of course…If you don’t want to cheat, I don’t blame you.”
We all stood in silence, filled with guilt, as Yunyun selflessly offered her help.
“Today is the last day of summer vacation, let's finish our homework and have fun!”
“We won’t go anywhere; it’ll be night by the time we finish.”
While Funifura and Dodonko were arguing, Yunyun, who seemed happy for some reason, murmured as she placed drinks and snacks on the table.
“I can't believe so many of my classmates are here...This summer vacation was so much fun...”
“Was? Summer vacation isn't over yet! Yunyun, think of something you want to do before we finish copying!”
“But, having friends study over is one of my biggest dreams! Now that it came true, I’ll be happy for the rest of my life.” Said Yunyun, as she happily arranged the snacks.
“You’re a member of the Crimson Magic, you have to have bigger dreams!”
Arue had a big smile on her face as we were arguing, “They make a great couple, don’t they Nerimaki?”
“I’m sure they make out every day. Wonder when they’ll get married?”
As Arue and Nerimaki teased me, I banged on the desk. “Shut up! If you say more...”
“Everyone, hurry up and finish!” Funifura, usually the most dishonest of us, scolded.
By the time we were done, it was completely dark outside.
“It's finished!! From now on I’ll do homework as soon as possible!” Funifura threw herself onto the carpet.
“Ah, um, I always finish my homework right away, s-so you can come to my house anytime...”
“Yunyun, we’re copying your work now, but don’t let us abuse your generosity!”
I got up to face Yunyun after laying on the carpet “So, Yunyun. Is there anything you want to do on the last night of summer vacation?”
“Eh!?... anything?” Yunyun looked up as if she had made up her mind.
Demon Hill.
Usually, a popular date spot for lovers, and a vegetable colony where one can get fresh ingredients. It’s popular among lovers because if they confess their love here, they’ll never be able to break up due to a curse, though there’s another reason…
“I never thought Yunyun would want to come up here and see the stars.’”
“I-It’s not wrong to be romantic! Listen, star gazing with my classmates is one of my dreams in life, okay? Today, two of my dreams came true, now I have something to remember all my life...”
“Yunyun, please dream a little bigger!”
From Demon Hill, you can usually see the entire village and a beautiful starry sky clearly.
But now...
“It's cloudy.”
“Yeah, because the adults are fighting the Great Spirit of Summer.”
As Funifura and Dodonko said, the sky was covered in thick clouds, probably due to the snow melting during the recent fierce battles. The adults must be enthusiastic about driving away the Great Spirit of Summer tonight, but...
Anyway, the important thing is that Yunyun is in a good mood despite not being able to see the stars.
“We may not be able to see the stars, but this is like a picnic, right? Well, I brought some drinks and snacks, it’s also one of my dreams in life to have a picnic with my friends...”
“Yunyun, I beg you...”
As I was entangled with Yunyun, Nerimaki yelled. “The decisive battle with the Great Spirit of Summer has begun!”
She was pointing at the adults, casting advanced magic at the Great Spirit of Summer. A gigantic tornado was wreaking havoc in an area covered with frost, while blue flashes of light were shinning all over the place.
A colorful magic display, almost like fireworks on a summer night. Although we couldn't see the starry sky, we still got quite a spectacle. Everyone, except me, was captivated by the sight and sound of the scene.
I’ve decided that I will leave the village once I learn explosion magic. I have no intention of making any friends here, but this isn’t a bad way to spend the last day of summer vacation.
Then.
A red light shone through the clouds as a bright meteorite fell from the sky.
Seems that someone cast Meteor Drop. That spell is not as good as Explosion, it’s joke magic, really. It’s a spell that draws a meteorite from the sky; a random meteorite that is, so its power is unpredictable, it could be strong enough to destroy the entire country, or it could burn up before reaching the ground.
Does this count as a shooting star? I wondered as Dodonko suddenly yelled.
“Ah! A shooting star, a shooting star! If you say your wish three times fast, it’ll come true…”
Before Dodonko finished, everyone put their hands together and chanted a wish.
“Give me friends, give me friends, please give me friends…”
“I want to be a writer, I want to be a writer, I want to be a writer!”
“Thriving business! Thriving business! I want a thriving business!”
“I hope my little brother grows up to be a good boy, make my little brother a good boy, a good boy…”
“Wait, everyone already had a wish? How can you say it with no hesitation?!”
Everyone continued to chant, quite energetically.
“W-Wait me too…! Huh, what do I want? A boyfriend! No, that’s too sudden, let me be friends with a nice boy first… No, no, I definitely want a boyfriend…” While speaking oddly, Dodonko made the wish of a maiden.
I watch in amazement as the magic battle continued, the Meteor Drops and other magic attacks making a gap in the clouds, it’s clear that the adults are going all out.
At this rate, autumn will come early.
It's the last night of summer vacation, and even though I'm sure it's just a superstition, I still make my wish.
I have already decided that I will learn explosion magic, and I am confident that I will become the strongest archwizard in the world.
In that case, my wish is...!
“I wish to become an adventurer! May my name be heard throughout the world, alongside the wonderful companions I have yet to meet!”
Translation Notes:
[1] Komekko calls Megumin siscon in the original Japanese.
[2] I was reading on shaved ice because of this and apparently one if its names in the Dominican Republic is Yun yun.
[3] For more information about these things check out Yorimichi Vol. 2 Chapter 5
[4] This place is referenced in the novels but omitted in the anime. Not to be confused with the Tomb of the Dark God, or Land where the nameless goddess was sealed.
