Translation introduction

Hello

Thank you for reading this. I’ve been a fan of the Slayers series for over 20 years, ever since I watched the original anime series on TV, as I figure most western fans were introduced to the series.

Fast forward to the start of the pandemic, and with a lot of newfound free time, I got interested in reading the original Slayers novel series, it was through that that I learned that the main series was just a part of a much bigger series, and there were over thirty more books about Lina Inverse’s misadventures!

Thanks to Tokyopop, and later J-Novel Club, the main series is officially fully translated, though for a long time the only way to read volumes 9-17 was fan translations.

However, that is not the case for the Slayers Special series, a collection of short stories that chronicle the life of a younger Lina Inverse and her self-proclaimed rival, Naga the Serpent, which have no translations in English, be it official or fan made. (Literally the day before posting this I found out this book had another fan translation, oh well)

Since then I’ve gotten half decent in Japanese, to the point I’ve translated a few other books as well, and started reading the series in its original language. The books are a lot of fun! So it’d be a shame if the international fanbase couldn’t read them as well.

While I can’t promise I’ll translate all of them (There are close to forty untranslated books between the Slayers Special and Smash series, plus one-off collections like Slayers Reading or the recent Slayers Spirit), it’d be a gigantic task that’d take several years, I’d at least like to get the ball rolling for more people to work on this.

Afterword

Hey there! How’s life treating you these days? With everything going on in the world, I hope you're hanging in there.

It’s been a while, sorry for the wait!

Today, I bring you Slayers Special Vol. 1: The Prince of Saillune!

And by “I,” I mean me, L (Hikari Natta), writing this after successfully drugging the author into a deep sleep.

As you’ve probably noticed, this is a collection of short stories. So, let’s go over them real quick:

The Prince of Saillune – The author's debut magazine work. That’s it.

Robber’s Killer – The title says it all, doesn’t it?

Naga’s Challenge – Just read it. It'll make sense. Probably.

Elsia’s Castle – A story about Elsia’s castle. What were you expecting?

Villain Fight! – A brand-new story written for this book. It’s about some villain getting punched or something. Notable for being in third person.

Now that you've got the general idea, I’m sure you’re thinking:

“What!? That’s it!? These descriptions are terrible!”

How rude! You never appreciate my hard work! Always doubting me! Never listening to what I say!

…But whatever.

Just go ahead and read them, even if you don’t buy the book. I approve.

That’s all from me.

See you next time for more stories!

Take care, everyone!
